Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 220752

Hob Uid: 220752
Location :
Wiltshire
East Kennett
Grid Ref : SU1161866982
Summary : East Kennet 1a, 6, 7 & 7a: 3 ring-ditches observed as cropmarks, plus one unlocated barrow (7a) "in Kennet parish" which, according to John Aubrey, was opened in 1643 and apparently contained an inhumation accompanied by a sword and a knife, presumably a Saxon secondary (or even primary?) interment. 6 and 7 were observed as cropmarks during recent RCHME aerial survey project work, but no trace was observed of 1a.
More information : Cropmarks of ring-ditches of three barrows visible on air-photographs. (1)

(A) SU 11586692, East Kennett 6, sixty yards north west of East Kennett Long Barrow.
(B: SU 116671), East Kennett 7, north of last.
(C) SU 11686690, East Kennett 1a, north-east of Long Barrow.
East Kennett 7a - an unlocated barrow 'In Kennet parish', recorded by Aubrey as being opened in "1643, two stones eleven feet long, laid side by side, and a corpse between with a sword and knife. Another like stone laid over all" A number of indeterminate crop-marks are visible to the west of East Kennett Long Barrow on air-photographs BZ010. (2)

No trace of any of these three barrows can be located on the ground. Area under crop on OS APs and not surveyable from St Joseph APs. (3)

An RCHME 1:2500 scale, level 3 air photographic interpretation project (Event UID 936869) was carried out on this monument in January 1992. Barrow 'A' (SU 11586694) was seen as a negative crop mark suggesting a ring ditch of approximately 26m diameter with no internal mound or other features. Barrow 'B' (SU 11576709) was seen as a negative crop mark suggestive of a broad ring ditch approximately 24m across. There is no trace of a mound, but there is a suggestion of a small central pit. There is no trace of barrow 'C'. The feature referred to on the CUCAP photograph BZ010 (2) is of agricultural origin. The archive created by this project (Collection UID 936807) is held by the RCHME. (4)

East Kennet 1a is mentioned but not described by Goddard, who notes some discrepancy between Colt Hoare and Smith concerning the number of extant barrows in the area of East Kennet Long Barrow (5-8).

Cropmark remains of three probable Bronze Age round barrows noted in authorities 1-8 above, situated to the north and north-east of the East Kennett long barrow (SU16NW 64). Barrow (C) located at SU 1167 6690 appears to have part of a larger incomplete ring ditch attached to its south-western side. It is unclear from the available photographs whether this is archaeological or agricultural in origin. (9)

A 2006 lidar survey shows a roughly cresent shaped low mound in the vicinity of the incomplete ring ditch/agricultural ditch. (12)
