St Hybalds Church

Hob Uid: 63488
Location :
North Lincolnshire
Hibaldstow
Grid Ref : SE9795002610
Summary : Medieval church with 19th century alterations and additions. The tower arch is 13th century, as is the South window of the chancel. The chancel was restored in 1865 by Ewan Christian. The nave, North aisle and vestry were rebuilt by James Fowler of Louth in , and the tower was rebuilt in 1958-60 by Lawrence Bond. An Early Medieval stone coffin containing an inhumation and a crozier was found during the restoration of the chancel in 1865. It is thought that this was St Hybald himself, and the inhumation was reinterred in the new chancel. Stafford lists Hibaldstow as a minster.
More information : [SE 97950261] St. Hibald's church [T.U.] (1)

Chancel re-built 1866, nave, 1876-7. When the chancel was built in
1864 an early stone coffin containing the skeleton of a man of
powerful frame, and a crozier, came to light. Probably the remains of
St.Hibald, who is mentioned by Bede. (2)

There are traces of a 13th c. arch in the west wall. (3)

The church is in normal use. From the church notice boards it is
apparent that the dedication is to St. Hybald and not Hibald as
published. Mrs. Insull stated the coffin was re-interred under the
new chancel. She had heard of a crozier and vestments but regarded
these as hear-say and referred to an eye-witness account written
in 1920. (4)

ST HIBALD. W tower by Lawrence Bond, 1958-60. Simple shape with
pyramid roof, but still Perp details. The tower arch E.E., but almost
entirely redone in 1866. The nave was rebuilt by Fowler in 1875.
The style is E.E. (5)
