More information : [SE 9940993] WAR DYKE [LB]. (1)

Resurveyed at 1:2500. (2)

The undated linear earthworks of War Dyke, Green Dyke (NZ 90 SE 19) and Stone Dale Dyke (SE 99 NE 11) appear to be isolated features and not part of a larger territorial scheme. (3)

A dyke known as War Dike used as a medieval estate boundary. Also identified from documentary sources from 1184 as the Steindic, it formed part of the boundary to land granted to the Knights Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem and later to Bridlington Priory. The remaining part of the dyke is about 150 metres in length and includes a bank up to 5 metres wide and 1 metre high and a 1 metre wide ditch to its west. (4 and 6)

This cross dyke of uncertain date is visible as an earthwork on air photographs, centred at SE9936 9992. Approximately 270m of this ditched feature is visible. (5)
