More information : (Centred SK 21022929 & 21062918). Two semi-lunar platforms with scarped edges, each about 100 yards across, are situated outside the castle ditch on the east and north-east fronts; separated from each other by the sunken track which forms the main approach from the River Dove, and which they were apparently designed to protect. (1-2)
These two features are as described above. They probably served as a barbican guarding the main approach to the castle. (3)
The two earthwork platforms described by authorities 1-3 were drawn as part of the RCHME's National forest Project. (4) |
