Summary : Bethnal Green Underground station was the first intermediate station on the Central line extension from Liverpool Street to Stratford. Opened on 4th December 1946, the station was situated at the junction of Roman Road and Cambridge Heath Road. Bethnal Green was of typical tube construction, with a 420ft station tunnel for each direction, linked by a concourse at one end, from which three escalators rose to the sub-surface ticket hall. The committee of the New Works Programme 1935-40 considered the name of Bethnal for the station to avoid confusion with the LNER station of Bethnal Green Junction. However, when the station opened the LNER had adopted the same name (Bethnal Green) for its station. |
