Summary : Site of two Bronze Age barrows with Early Medieval burials, Roundhill Field, Ferrybridge. Excavations in 1866 revealed that both barrows had Bronze Age cremations and inhumations, and one of the barrows had an inhumation in armour, thought to be Saxon.
More information : [SE 4734 2449] TUMULUS [O.E.]. (1)

A large tumulus, still 54 ft in diameter in Roundhill Field on left of road from Ferrybridge to Castleford, opened in the 19th century and excavated in 1866 by Canon Greenwell. It contained an Early Bronze Age cist burial with beaker and food vessels, Mid Bronze Age cinerary urns, and at least two Anglian burials. (2-4)

Two Bronze Age barrows excavated April, 1962, by A. L. Paccitto. The first consisted of two conccentric ring ditches 55' and 75' in diameter, and have been previously excavated [by Greenwell above]. The second had the remains of a ring ditch 25' in diameter and contained an inhumation in a central grave, accompanied by a flint dagger of EBA type. (5)

The published barrow has been obliterated by the construction of temporary buildings associated with the construction of a new power station. The precise site of the second, excavated by Paccitto, was indicated at SE 47332444 by Mr. D. Townsend (a). Its position has now, however, been levelled for development and no trace remains. Mr Townsend states that the finds from the second barrow will be displayed in the power station when completed. (6)
