More information : (SJ 98829092) Brown Low (NR) (1) A Large barrow at Ludworth Intakes called Brown Low was excavated in 1809 by Marriott. Nothing of interest was found except 'speiks of bone', fire-blackened stones etc. and the barrow was restored. Brown Low round barrow is scheduled, No.49. Brown Low is a turf and tree covered cairn 24.0m. in diameter and 2.0m. in height. The top has slight mutilations where the composition of stones is apparent. Resurveyed at 1:2500. (2-4) Brown Low now scheduled in Greater Manchester as No.3. (5)
SJ 9881 9091. Brown Low bowl barrow. Located on the southern edge of high ground to the NE of Marple. The mound is up to 2.0m high and 25.5m in diameter. Two hollows on the mound's summit are the legacy of Marriott's 1809 excavation. (6) |
