Ad Bavuae

Hob Uid: 78979
Location :
North Lincolnshire
Barrow upon Humber
Grid Ref : TA0729021730
Summary : Saxon Monastery of Ad Bavuae at Barrow, founded between 669 and 672 by King Wulfhere of Mercia and St Chad. It was destroyed by the Danes in the earliest phase of their incursions, circa 870. The supposed site is associated with the monastery because of the large number of burials without associated grave goods which have been found in the vicinity, although some gold rings were reputedly found in the cemetery. Stafford suggests that Barrow was a minster. (Excavations in 1977-8 located a Middle-Late Saxon church. See TA02SE26).
More information : The monastery of 'Ad Baruae' in Lindsay - generally
identified with Barrow on Humber - was founded about the middle
of the 7th century, probably between 669 and 672. It was destroyed
by the Danes and never rebuilt.

Near the Gas House, Barrow [area centred : TA0729 2173] is the
site of the monastery said to have been founded by St. Chad, who
obtained from Wulfere, King of Mercia, the land of 50 families
at Barwe. Said to be afterwards the seat of a Saxon bishop. A
stone coffin, a gold ring, and a two-pronged iron fork have been
found here. (1-2)

The former Gas House (now Chesney House) is at TA 07312172; here
a burial in a stone coffin was found in the 19th c. In 1880 many
skeletons were found in an area cent. at TA 07362169. They were
without coffins, oriented east-west, and laid head to foot.
Several 'gold rings' are also reported as having been found and
it has been assumed that this was the monk's cemetery. (3)

There are no surface indications of this site. Chesney House is
unoccupied. (4)
