Summary : During the excavation for an air-raid shelter in 1939 five Anglo-Saxon inhumations, a hanging bowl, two Roman coins used as weights, scales, work boxes and a gold bead were found. The weights and balance appear to be of late 6th or 7th centuries, but the hanging bowl is 5th century. The area was extensively excavated in 1982-3 and 1989-90. 226 inhumations were found in 195 graves, and a single cremation urn was also found. Circa 60% of inhumations were accompanied by grave goods, dating from the mid 6th century onwards.
More information : [TA 03122170] Anglo-Saxon inhumation burials found at Barton upon Humber in 1939. Five skeletons, a bronze hanging bowl, two cylindrical bronze workboxes, a set of scales and eight weights (including two Roman coins) a decorated bronze handle and a gold bead.(a) The bowl is probably sub-Roman work of the 5th Cent.; the two Roman coins used as weights are one of Constantine II, and a larger, very much worn, early one of, perhaps, Trajan. (1-2) The above finds were made during the construction of an air raid shelter by Mr. H.D. Fields. The objects are all in Hull Museum. Mr. Fields could not be contacted, but the site of the former air-raid shelter is still visible at TA 03172175. (3)
