Rains Batch

Hob Uid: 197348
Location :
Somerset
Mendip
Priddy
Grid Ref : ST5020056460
Summary : A possible small sub rectangular Roman earthwork, also visible on aerial photographs is recorded at Rain's Batch.
More information : [ST 50205645 (2)] Rain's Batch earthwork is situated
380 yds. almost due north of Town field earthwork [ST 502561.]
The bank is clearly traceable on the ground; the ditch is
ill-defined, and the total relief of both is not more than 1
ft. There is no well marked entrance. Visible on air photos. (1-3)

A small, sub-rectangular earthwork almost ploughed out. The
banks, nowhere more than 0.5m. high, can only be traced with
difficulty, but are clearly visible on air photos.

Surveyed at 1:2500. (4)

Marked as possibly Roman on map by Jones and Lewis (5). Boon
says it appears to be closely associated with the RB. field-
system (ST 55 NW 1), and may have been a farmstead or cattle
pound. (5-6)

Probably part of the Roman town lay-out. (7)
