Summary : A Second World War non-standard square pillbox or machine gun post built into the north side of Pevensey Castle. The structure was constructed in 1940-41 and built of flint and reinforced concrete. There is also a medium embrasure looking west. A field visit in 1996 found the structure extant and in a good condition.
More information : Machine gun post built into Pevensey Castle: no access to interior. 1 medium embrasure, looking W. Non-standard square pillbox. Pevensey Castle (N side), Pevensey. (1) Aerial photographs show this gun emplacement on the SE bastion of the keep with the Norman castle at Pevensey at TQ 645366 04771. The structure was left in place at the end of the war and appears as an oblong flat-roofed structure c.4.6m x 8.5. According to the post war Ministry of Works maps alterations to the castle, the steps to the gun emplacement were removed. (2)
