More information : (NY 49593857) Roman Camp (R) (Site of) (1) Cropmark of a 'new' Roman Camp, east of Old Penrith, Plumpton Wall. (2) Nothing visible on the ground. (3) The eastern half of a Roman camp (?) visible as a fairly faint cropmark. No entrances are visible and the only internal detail is a small circular/oval ring-ditch at NY 49633861. A cropmark approximately to three sides of a small square is visible just outside the camp's NE corner. Air-photograph (b) shows detail in the adjacent field to the west, cropmarks which probably relate to the above "site"; which now looks less and less like a Roman camp. A field system possibly? (4)
Rejected as a Roman camp by RCHME: Roman Camps in England Project following transcription at 1:2500 scale in 1987. The cropmarks may represent vicus remains and associated field systems of Old Penrith fort (VOREDA; NY 43 NE 2). (5) |
