Car Dyke

Hob Uid: 1034943
Location :
Lincolnshire
North Kesteven
Dunston, Nocton
Grid Ref : TF0883063360
Summary : Scheduled section of watercourse traditionally thought to be a Roman canal but proved to form part of late 1st or early 2nd century fen drainage system. Surviving earthwork.
More information : (TF 088 633 - TF 082 646). Approaching Nocton Wood, where the water of Dunston beck flows into it, the channel is 12 feet wide.
Although tree-covered the banks are visible as far as Nocton Delph.
The eastern bank emerges from the wood, the other continues just within its limits as far as its northern boundary. (1)

TF 0883 6336 - TF 0855 6431. Ditch narrows, very slight counterscarp on east.
TF 0855 6331 - TF 0820 6460. Broad flat causeway to east of ditch carries track. (2)

TF 082 646 - TF 089 634. Car Dyke in Nocton Wood. Scheduled. (3)
For further details see Ordnance Survey Linear Archive File in NMRC (4)

A brief field examination revealed that the ditch between TF 0820
6460 and TF 0883 6336 is still well defined, but the bank delineating
it on the western side was not visible because it was within
woodland. (5)
