'... The old hall was visited by Queen Elizabeth in 1575, and was occupied by Mary, Queen of Scots from Christmas 1585, to September 1586. This house was burnt down in 1781 or '2, and a smaller one built on the same site, which was also burnt down in 1847, when the present house was built, a portion of the old house can be seen, that nearest the moat..' The dykes behind the house and the moat at Daffodil Wood are mentioned but no indication of their purpose is given. (2)
Chartley: 'The Manor House, close to the castle, at the foot of the hill, was built by Walter Devereux about 1475...' (3)
The Homestead Moat at Chartley Old Hall is square, having 400' sides, and is connected on the E. side with a lake measuring 600' x 376'. (4)
The moat around 'Chartley Castle' is still water-filled and is correct as shown on the O.S. 6". Its enlarged eastern arm is presumably ornamental and contains two small artificial islands. It is fed by the Amerton Brook which enters near the northern end of the eastern arm and emerges on the south side. No old work was seen in the house. (5)
