Historic England Research Records

Great Limber Grange

Hob Uid: 80267
Location :
Lincolnshire
West Lindsey
Great Limber
Grid Ref : TA1384008490
Summary : Probable Hospitallers camera and Post-Medieval house, now visible as earthworks, on the site of a Cistercian grange. The Cistercian grange was extant by 1157 until 1393. It later became a camera of the Knights Hospitallers. Cropmarks of an enclosure probably relate to the Hospitallers grange, and there is a probable post-Mediaeval house cropmark.
More information : [TA 13840849] Grange [GT] (Site of). (1)

Great Limber, dependent on the Cistercian Abbey of Aunay-sur-Odon, was perhaps a grange rather than a priory. Afterwards appropriated to the Carthusian Abbey of St Anne. In existence before 1157 and dissolved in 1393. (2-4)

Extensive earthworks which occupy the site have been re-surveyed at 1:2500. Adjacent early fields and roads are more probably associated with the village of Great Limber than with the monastic complex. (5)

TA 1381 0854. Camera of the Knights Hospitallers, medieval
settlement and cultivation remains, post-medieval house and gardens. Scheduled RSM no. 22688. [See also source 9 below for online access to information about this Designation]. (6)

A rectangular enclosure, which overlies the south-eastern corner of the extensive settlement remains (recorded as TA 10 NW 11) referred to here by Authorities 5-6, was seen as an earthwork and mapped from good quality air photographs. The substantially embanked enclosure, 95m by 80m, overlies earlier closes and has a large rectangular enclosure, possibly a barn, in the south-east corner. It has been suggested that these later features may be connected with the holding by the Templars (sic) and Hospitallers (7a), whilst a compact arrangement of rectilinear, conjoined enlosures which also lies within the enclosure, probably represents the ground plan of a sizeable Post Medieval house. Centred at TA 1384 0849
(Morph No. LI.282.1.6-8)

This description is based on data from the RCHME MORPH2 database.
