Manor Farm House

Hob Uid: 80431
Location :
North Lincolnshire
North Killingholme
Grid Ref : TA1443017670
Summary : An L-shaped brick house dating to the early to mid-16th century with additions of circa 1700, built within a partially moated site. The earlier part was the wing of a more substantial manor house for which no other evidence remains.
More information : [TA 14431767] Moat [G.T]. (1)

The moated manor house at North Killingholme is "supposed to
have been built in the reign of Henry VII," though original
remains suggest that of Elizabeth (3) (2-3)

The house has been considerably altered and apart from the
brickwork retains little of original character. See G.P.s
AO/63/5/3 & 4.

The moat is incomplete and ornamental only. Published survey
(25") revised. (4)

TA 1444 1763. Manor Farm moated site. Scheduled RSM No 21188.
Two moated sites, a smaller one located in the NW corner of the
larger, and other associated features. The large moated site
measures c.240m E-W by 180m N-S. Its defining moat is best preserved
at the N end where it remains water-filled. The N arm is 10m wide
and at least 2m deep. An outer bank, 0.5m high and 5m wide, flanks
this arm of the moat. On the W side only the N half of the moat is
visible as an earthwork; here a 100m length is visible as a ditch
10m wide and 2m deep. This W arm of the moat would originally have
extended further to the S but is now infilled. The E arm of the
larger site similarly survives only to the N, where it is 125m long,
10m wide and 2m deep. It also contains water. The S arm is infilled
but remains visible as a slight hollow 0.5m deep running across
fields to the S of the farmyard.

The smaller site has an island 50m square. The N and W arms are
formed by the arms of the larger moat. The S and E arms remain
visible as earthworks up to 10m wide and 2m deep, retaining water.
Access to the island of this smaller site is provided by a causeway
across the NE corner of the moat.

The remainder of the larger island not taken up by the smaller site
appears to have been sub-divided by further drainage ditches. One of
these remains as a water filled ditch extending the E arm of the
smaller site to the S to link up with the S outer moat. The link to
the smaller moat is infilled. Manor Farmhouse is Listed Grade II*
and its adjacent stables and granaries Listed Grade II. (6)
