More information : [TA 26920873] The Abbey on site of [TI] Priory [GT]. (1)
The Augustinian Abbey of Wellow, or Grimsby, was founded between 1123 and 1133, possibly 1132 (a), and dissolved in 1536. (2)
V.C.H. gives a history of Wellow Abbey which was dedicated to St.Augustine and St.Olaf. (3)
St. James' Church, Grimsby, is often "confused with the Abbey church of Wellow, which stood a quarter of a mile to the south. The actual site of Wellow is still doubtful, but there is good reason to believe it stood in the grounds of the mansion called 'The Abbey'. Large and finely worked 12th century stones have been dug up here recently. New houses have also been built to the east where human remains were dug up. (4)
The Abbey Mansion is now tenanted by the Royal Air Force Association.
Many worked stones including a finial cross are to be seen in the grounds forming small retaining walls for flower beds and rockeries. (5)
