[Centred SU 229515] Tumuli [NR]. (1)
Barrow C: SU 22815145, Collingbourne Ducis 8c, a bowl barrow 15 paces in diameter, 1foot high. Aerial photographs, unspecified, shows that the mound had been enlarged. (2) Excavated by W.C Lukis (Barrow WCL 3), no primary burial was located, sherds of Bronze Age urns , one with applied horseshoe handles were recovered and may belong to the period of enlargement. An intrusive crouched inhumation of an aged man with an iron knife close to the hands may be Early Iron Age, Romano-British or post-Roman. (3)
Barrow C: Collingbourne Ducis 8c, a bowl barrow in arable, 0.3 metres high with unsurveyable traces of a ditch. Surveyed at 1:2500. (4)
Originally recorded as Collingbourne 8c by Goddard. (5)
A bowl barrow reduced by ploughing, but with traces of a ditch just visible. The overall diameter is 21 metres. The barrow is very difficult to see. Excavations in the 19th century recorded a crouched inhumation. (6) |
