St Augustines Abbey

Hob Uid: 464613
Location :
Kent
Canterbury
Non Civil Parish
Grid Ref : TR1551057800
Summary : Great dorter at St Augustine's Abbey, completed by Abbot Hugh de Fleury in 1120. Mostly destroyed in the 17th century but much of the large north wall of the dormitory is still visible. The dormitory was built on a large groin-vaulted undercroft and has been calculated to have been three bays wide by about fourteen bays long. It is thought to have been the longest monastic dormitory in the country.
More information : The dormitory of St Augustine's Abbey seems to have been completed by
Abbot Hugh Flory c1120. Originally 204 x 44ft, it is one of the longest in the country. Thorne states that it had a chapel constructed in it and studies adjoining, but hardly anything now remains above ground except the N end wall, which stands to a height of 24ft. (1)

Great dorter, standing upon an undercroft, destroyed to within a few
feet of floor level except the N end. Dormitory undercroft 193ft x 42ft divided by 2 rows of columns supporting the vault. (2)

Dormitory partly uncovered during excavations in 1902-3 by Routledge.
