Summary : The gatehouse of the castle, now a museum and private library. Built in the mid-13th century with early 17th century alterations; restored in 1883 for the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle. The lower part is of oval plan and the upper is octagonal with a square front projection, of four storeys and attic and three bays. A pit excavated outside the gate in 1978 is thought to be have been dug during the Civil War as an additional defence. |
