Summary : Fort Number 2 of London's Civil War defences was on the south side of Whitechapel Road, close to the present site of the London Hospital. Lithgow referred to the site as a nine-angled fort, but the resolution of the common council called for a hornwork, an angle of which appears on Christopher Wren's map of West Heath in 1673.
