Northbourne Court, Northbourne. "St. Augustine's Abbey, Canterbury, had a grange here, of which nothing remains above ground." The present house is c. 1780 with an older north-west wing. The previous house was 17th century demolished in 1750, and remains of this can be seen in the north-east corner of the north-east rectangle of the garden walls, which are themselves 17th century. On the south-west side there is an archway which was the main gate to the old house, and opposite this a 17th century red brick barn, the flintwork base of which may be of pre-Dissolution date. Northbourne Court, private residence of Lord Northbourne is as described and in good condition. (Centred at TR 3368 5224.) The remains of the 17th century house at TR 3372 5220 comprise a rectangular building measuring 11.5 metres by 7.2 metres. The walls, of flint rubble 0.9 metres thick, stand to a maximum height of 6.0 metres. Wall junctions indicate further extension to the north east and south west (see GP AO/64/122/4.)
The 17th century gateway, of red brick with stone dressings, is in fair condition (see GP AO/64/122/3). The farm, at TR 3364 5225, is as described and in good condition. Nothing remains of the grange or chapel. (4)
Northbourne Court and walls attached, Grade II. House. Early and late 18th century alteration of 17th century core, altered and extended c. 1930. Wall to right, 18th century, incorporating 2 gate piers. The house is either on the site of part of the great mansion built c. 1616 for Sir Edwin Sandys and demolished 1750, itself on the site of a grange of St. Augustine's Canterbury, or else a post 1750 adaptation of outbuildings associated with the house. Original Northbourne Court built for Sir Edwin Sandys by 1616 largely demolished in 1750 - ruins remain in north-east corner of northern garden enclosure.
