Monument Number 63708

Hob Uid: 63708
Location :
North Lincolnshire
Winterton
Grid Ref : SE9100018000
Summary : Miscellaneous finds from Cliff Farm, Winterton include part of a Neolithic polished axe (in Lincoln Museum, accession number 10.30) and a Bronze Age palstave. Roman finds including pottery, a quern and animal remains are probably associated with the villa SE 91 NW 14.
More information : [Marginal] Miscellaneous finds from Winterton include:

Broken polished axe found in 1852 at Cliff Farm. [Old and New
Cliff Farms, SE 9119.] In Lincoln Museum. Flanged palstave found
near Winterton. Also from Cliff Farm, two Roman vessels and part of
a third, in which were found 13 rudely formed lead disks, varying
from 5/8ins. to 1 1/2 in across, some with perforations.
Two pots are in Scunthorpe Museum.

[See SE 91 NW 14 for Roman Villa site]

Coarse earthenware bowl and quern fragments found about 3ft down in
1868. Animal bones were also found. (1-5)

Of the above finds, a flagon and vase are held by Scunthorpe Museum.
The polished axe is still in Lincoln Museum (acc. no. 10.30) and
the discs are reported lost. The location of the other finds was not
ascertained. It seems probable that the Cliff Farm referred to is the
Old Cliff Farm at SE 9134 1825 as the other building is modern
and the majority of these finds are probably associated with
the villa. (6)
