Summary : This octagonal garden store was built as a dovecote in the 14th century for Gisborough Priory. Built from dressed sandstone and two stories in height, the building has lancet windows to the first floor, a door way to the south and blocked openings to the west and east. The pyramidal Welsh slate roof, timber cupola and finial date from the mid 18th century.
More information : An octagonal, ruined dovecote at Guisborough stands in the former gardens attached to the old hall of the Chaloner family which was demolished circa 1825, leaving only the brewhouse now used as an estate office. (1) The site of the old hall at NZ 61571591 is now occupied by modern buildings. (2) No no traces remain of the old hall. The octagonal dovecote at NZ 61601603 is now used as a store house. (2) Priory Dovecote. Medieval. Gde 1. (3) NZ6116 GUISBOROUGH CHURCH STREET (OFF SOUTH SIDE) 7/59 Priory Dovecote, to W. of St. Mary's Priory ruins. 14.6.52 I Dovecote, now a garden store. C14, Dressed sandstone; mid C18 pyramidal Welsh slate roof with lead-roll ridges and leaded, ogee roofed, open sided timber cupola, with weather vane finial. Octagonal. 2 storeys. Drip mould between floors. Equilateral headed doorway to S. elevation; vertically boarded door. Lancet windows to first floor. Blocked segmental-headed openings to E. & W. elevations; lancet opening to N. elevation. Timber nesting boxes have been removed. (4)
