More information : Documentary sources relating to barrows in the vicinity of Windmill Hill causewayed enclosure were examined as part of the RCHME project on Industry and Enclosure in the Neolithic. Grinsell's Avebury 47a (1a), sited by him to SU 091706, appears not to have been previously recorded by the Ordnance Survey. The NGR published by Grinsell is an approximation of the location of Smith's (1b) barrow 'o', derived from Smith's own map. Smith described the barrow as "a very large, very wide-spreading barrow, fast disappearing under the plough". Grinsell was unable to trace it on the ground. For a full discussion of barrows in the Windmill Hill area, see the archive report. (1)
The round barrow described by the previous authority was not visible on available aerial photographs. (2) |
