Location : Lincolnshire East Lindsey Kirkby on Bain, Roughton, Tattershall, Tumby, Coningsby, Tattershall Thorpe, Haltham, Horncastle
|
More information : Horncastle Canal in Tattershall constructed before 1792, blocked by embankment, now disused, continues NE from TF 194571. The whole of the Navigation, which was the canalised River Bain, is converted into drainage works as a result of severe flooding in 1960. In most places, where the river and canal diverged, the latter now carries the flow of water, with the wiers covered by earth banks. The lower stretch of the canal from Tattershall to the Witham, is cut off from the river in a similar way, and the river carries the water. All of the locks have been converted to wiers with sluices, and nothing but the line of the canal, with some of the brickwork of the lock chamber, remains. (1)
