Summary : London Underground station. The southern extension of the City and South London Railway was brought into use between Stockwell and Clapham Common via Clapham Road (now Clapham North) on 3rd June 1900. The station was designed by TP Figgis in brick with stone dressings. The station was closed in November 1923 as part of an enlargment programme carried out by the City and South London Railway. In 1924, in conjuction with this enlargement, Frank Pick commissioned Charles Holden to remodel the station. A new entrance building was constructed. It is a small circular domed building with wings to the north and south. It is built from structural faience blocks with a glazed dome and the Underground motif on the frieze. The interior is tiled in white with green panel borders. The ticket hall is reached via stairs; the foyers and access corridors also have white tiles with green panel borders renewed in the pattern of the original in 1997. The station is one of only two surviving underground stations with a central island platform.
