More information : (Centred SK 583 042) The Newarke, a walled south extension to the castle bailey created by Henry, Earl of Lancaster, about 1330 and apparently further enlarged in 1354. Up to the Reformation it was a walled enclosure with collegiate church, hospital, canons' and chantry priests' houses. A fragment of the wall survives behind Newarke Houses Museum together with the main Magazine Gateway (SK 50 SE 164) and the Turret Gateway (SK 50 SE 163 ) into the castle. (1)
