Summary : Church, late 12th-early 13th century with restorations and rebuilding of east end and vestry 1873 by JH Walton, and stained glass by Morris and Company. Limestone ashlar, plain tile roof. Formerly the priory church of Nun Monkton nunnery, (SE55NW1).
More information : (SE 51155793 -sited from HHR map) Grade A Church of St.Mary Nave is part of the C.12 Benedictine Funnery founded in 1150. Excellent West front with doorway having 3 orders of arches and zigzag ornament and five orders of columns. Above are 3 tall lancet windows. Niches (with one statue) "ought to be known to all those who care for the classic moment in English Gothic art". East wall robuilt in 1873 with the "finest stained glass in the West Riding" by William Morris. (See SE 55 NW 1 -Benedictine Priory) (Site of) (1)
