More information : SE 330868. Allerthorpe in Swainby. Mentioned in Domesday Book, also in 1301 as manor only and again in 1327 with Swainby. "The Priory founded here in 1190 moved to Covetham in 1215, probably leaving Allerthorpe as a Grange" (refers to the Premonstratensian abbey - see SE 38 NW 2 and 3 for the alleged sites). (1 - 2)
The farmstead of Allerthorpe Hall obviously perpetuates the Domesday record, but there is now nothing about the Hall itself, or in the vicinity, to suggest the site of any grange cum village. Former earthworks at SE 33458678 (SE 38 NW 3), which may have been connected, are destroyed. (3) |
