More information : [NY 9767 6487 & NY 9834 6460] Carelgate [LB] (Course of) [T.I.] (1) Carelgate was used from medieval times till the 18th C. as the main road from Corbridge to Hexham. From Corbridge, it held to the N. bank of the Tyne and, passing south of Corbridge Mill, forded the Cor Burn; on reaching th N.E. angle of Shordon Brae wood, it turned W. towards Hexham. It was finally closed in the late 19th C. (2) Carelgate extends from NY 964 652 to NY 988 644 and for the major partit has been obliterated by cultivation and tree planting. Part of the route, from Corbridge to Corbridge Mill, still survives as a metalled footpath. (3)
