Location :
East Riding of Yorkshire

Grid Ref : TA2121247032
Summary : World War II beach defence battery, Hornsea seen on 1945 air photograph. Destroyed by coastal erosion by 1992.
More information : TA 2122 4703. Beach defence battery.
This beach defence battery would have formed Hornsea's heavy defence in the event of an attempted landing, and was positioned towards the southern end of the town. The battery consisted of two 4.7" guns and their emplacements, along with associated buildings such as ordnance depots and the like. The buildings and emplacements were of brick and concrete construction and were plotted by the Fortress Studies Group from aerial photographs dated 1945. They also visited the site in 1992 as part of the Holderness Survey, when it was found to be completely destroyed by the effects of coastal erosion. (1-1a)

The monument is also visible as upstanding structures on air photographs examined as part of the Rapid Coastal Assessment Survey of the Yorkshire and Humber Estuary. Due to coastal erosion the monument no longer survives in situ. (2)
