More information : TA 2118 4723. `Eared' pillbox. (for full description see TA 15 SE 35) This `eared' pillbox, of reinforced concrete construction was intended to provide flanking fire across the beach in the event of an invasion. The pillbox is positioned towards the southern end of Hornsea beach, and is part of the complex of anti-invasion, and invasion containment defences around Hornsea. The site was plotted from aerial photographs by the Fortress Studies Group. When they visited the site in 1992 as part of the Holderness Survey they found it to be totally destroyed. (1-1a)
The monument is also visible as an upstanding structure on air photographs examined as part of the Rapid Coastal Assessment Survey of the Yorkshire and Humber Estuary. Due to coastal erosion the monument no longer survives in situ. (2)
