| Summary : A Second World War concrete pillbox, located on the western edge of Cliffe Woods, has been mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. This hexagonal pillbox was part of the in depth defences associated with the Hoo Stop Line (Monument 1542577), a system of anti tank ditches, pillboxes and gun emplacements constructed in 1940 across the south western third of the Hoo Peninsula, from the Medway to the Thames. The pillbox was located 360 metres to the south west of a section of anti tank ditch (Monument 1542694), and faced north along Town Road. |

This hexagonal pillbox was part of the in depth defences associated with the Hoo Stop Line (Monument 1542577), a system of anti tank ditches, pillboxes and gun emplacements constructed in 1940 across the south western third of the Hoo Peninsula, from the Medway to the Thames. The pillbox was located 360 metres to the south west of a section of anti tank ditch (Monument 1542694), and faced north along Town Road amid the bungalows of a pre-War housing estate. Several associated pillboxes are located in the vicinity (Monuments 1544029, 1544018, 1418675, 1418719). The pillbox was visible on aerial photographs taken between 1942 and 1961, but had been removed by housing development by 1970. (1-3) |
