Monument Number 927416
Hob Uid:
927416
Location :
Cumbria
Eden
Hesket
Grid Ref :
NY4780042100
Summary :
The monument includes a Romano-British field system located on the north west slope of Thiefside Hill, a short distance west of the main Roman road which linked the Roman forts at Old Penrith (Voreda) and Carlisle (Luguvalium). The site has been identified on aerial photographs and is located adjacent to the south eastern corner of the contemporary farmstead. The field system includes an enclosure approximately 50 metres square. A trackway runs in a north easterly direction from the northern corner of the square enclosure and can be traced on aerial photographs for approximately 80 metres.
More information :
NY 478 421 (Locality): A rapid examination of air photographs (1a) reveals cropmarks situated directly to the east and south of a Roman camp (see NY 44 SE 1) and consisting of an enclosure with associated linear features. The enclosure is rectangular in shape and roughly on the same alignment as the Roman camp. Because of the nature of these cropmarks and their proximity to the Roman camp, a Roman date is possible. (1)
A fragmentary field system, a rectilinear enclosure, a trackway and short ditches which may have formed an enclosure are visible as cropmarks on air photos. These features are located around a probable Roman farmstead (UID11351) and are likely to be of similar date. The rectilinear enclosure is located at the south-eastern corner of the farmstead at NY4785 4212, it measures 50x40m and lies in the same orientation as the farmstead enclosure. This enclosure is flanked to the east by a trackway. Between these enclosures and the Brougham to Carlisle Roman road (UID1031541) to the east there are a series of long ditches and occasional cross-ditches. These appear to be the remains of a field system. The short ditches visible on either side of the modern road to the south-west of Petteril Cottages (NY4753 4235) may the remains of another enclosure. (3-7)
