More information : Two plough damaged mounds, possible stack stands of medieval or post medieval date are visible as earthworks on air photographs at SE2788 9171 and SE2778 9192. By 1946 the more southerly example was nearly levelled but retained a sub-square form. At that time the more northerly example appeared better preserved. The Ordnance Survey map of 1857 depicts the latter and names it The Mount. The southern feature is not marked but the general area is named as Cloven Hills, with the additional note that "Skeletons and pieces of Armour have been dug up here" (see UID 52364). Both measure c. 20m across. The northern mound is now under woodland and the southern mound is not visible on the Google Earth photography. (1-3) |
