Location :
Hampshire
Basingstoke and Deane
Mortimer West End
Grid Ref : SU6385062920
Summary : A possible Roman cemetery identifed near the north gate at Calleva Atrebatum. The evidence for the cemetry comprised a human skull, crushed under a large stone, which was found in the counterscarp of the outer ditch of the towns defences.
More information : [Name centred SU 6385 6292] Site of ROMAN INTERMENTS [G.S.] (1)

Conventional authorisation of published entry - no details. (2-3)

A human skull, crushed under a large stone, was found in the counterscarp of the outer ditch [of the wall] outside the north gate. (4)

Upon the north road at about 120 yards from the gateway, within
the Outer Earthwork, the site of a Roman burial place was
discovered. (5)

A cemetery lay outside the north gate on the flat ground between this and the Outer Earthwork. It has not been excavated. (6)

It would appear that the chance discovery of burials in the area was kept secret to allow unhindered excavation. This, however, never took place. (7)
