The gatehouse '... was probably built early in the reign of HENRY I ... The front of the gate is masked by a 14th century four-centred gate-arch which has a portcullis groove and two projecting wing walls covering the site of the drawbridge. Behind this arch is the original early 12th - century gatehouse, a two-storied structure with sides of 36 feet; each end is piereced by a round-headed gateway arch without portcullis grooves'. There is a Tudor window in the upper chamber. (2)

The remains of the gatehouse comprise a roofless two storeyed shell built of dressed and regularly coursed stone.

It has two opposing, four centred arched openings in the north and south walls of the upper storey. One of these has been infilled, and a two light mullioned window inserted. Also in the upper storey are the remains of a fireplace, and a five light mullioned and transomed window. Exterior decoration includes zig-zag ornament, and the remains of carved figures, both on the W. front. The spur walls of the masking gatehouse are 4.0 m. in length and 1.5 m. in width.
See G.P. AO 60/9/5 for eastern aspect. (3)
