More information : 5m to 8m wide causeway between two substantial sharp cut ditches that are up to 1.5m deep with particularly prominent swelling in the ground where the road reaches the modern wall-line. Causeway has irregular surface and may suggest a later re-use of Stanegate. (1)
This presumed section of road, from NY 6888 6560 to NY 6905 6564, (see also NY 66 NE 154, UID 1009919 and NY 66 NE 197, UID 1009965) has several incised ditches cut into the surface, which probably represent post medieval trackways (see NY 66 NE 364, UID 1393450). The raised areas or 'causeways' between have been interpreted as the agger of Stanegate Roman road, but in this section this is not certain from the air photographic evidence. (2) |
