Full description

A probable Roman coffin of Bath stone containing a child's skeleton & nails found in 1901 in a narrow strip of plantation leading out of the garden of Saltford House.{1} Burials in garden of Saltford House.{2}{3} Mr Stiles of 2, Collins Buildings, High St, Saltford. found this coffin when excavating the post hole for a field gate at ST68276762.The coffin is now in the garden N of Saltford House. Although broken in many pieces the fragments have been roughly fitted together and show that it has a rounded head and is1.6m x 0.5m wide overall.{4}
