Full description

Decoy, site of Hermitage, Hermitage Wood
<CB13233> There would appear to have been a hermitage in the immediate neighbourhood of the homestead moat (TL 17 NE 21), early in the C16
R3, Moat (NR) at TL/1966/7786.O6, Published 25in correct, but this is a decoy not a moat.
<CB6225> A well preserved moated enclosure some 10,5m x 15,5m in Hermitage Wood is believed to mark the site of a small hermitage built on land held by Merton Priory in Surrey here since 1157. The hermitage seems to have been abandoned by 1325 when the site was referred to as Hermitage Wood, a name it has retained until the present day. Merton Priory held the rectory, 3 acres enclosed by a dyke and a hedge and a further 50 acres of land here. The site is marked by a well-preserved rectangular ditched enclosure some 10,5m by 15,5m in Hermitage Wood. The moat is in private hands but can be seen from the public footpath running on the E side of Hermitage Wood.
