Full description
1. An evaluation revealed that quarrying for clunch took place in the past. Roman finds from one of the quarries suggests a possible earliest date in the Roman period. Worked clunch pieces found suggests the clunch was quarried for use nearby, perhaps in a substantial Roman building, although it may be much later. The 13th C church and parts of the school buildings and village hall are examples of later buildings that have clunch in their construction. Other undated possible structural features were also encountered.
