Full description

R1, Moated site (Class A 2 (b); NG TL/301-/485-, pond only on OS) 230yds SW of Monument (16) on gault clay. The earthworks of the deserted village lie to the N. The only dating evidence is a sherd, possibly C11, found in the outer edge of the E ditch of the moat. A roughly rectangular enclosure measuring 85ft N by 105ft E by 80ft S by 97ft W is surrounded by a wet ditch 25ft to N40ft wide (widest on the S), 2ft to 3ft deep and 15ft to 20ft wide at water level. On the S site is a slight external bank 20ft wide and 6in to 9in high. A causeway 10ft wide crosses the N ditch near the centre but is 6in below the level interior and does not appear to be original, though lying at the end of the hollow way through the village (Monument (15) (b) ) which connects the two moats. Attached to the S side is a roughly rectangular enclosure measuring 110ft N by 135ft E by 98ft S by 108ft W. Its E and W sides are formed by banks 12ft to 20ft wide and 6in to 1ft high, best preserved on the E; the S side is a pond, now dry, 3ft to 4ft deep.
3. Adjacent to Clopton DMV. A defensive homestead moat. Description of R1 correct; there are no surface traces of a former building. The remains of a small fish pond are evident to the S. Surveyed at 1:2500.
