Full description

Deserted Medieval site adjoining Castle Camps.
R1. The existing remains are confined to a small pasture field N of the church - damaged. The main feature of the site is a holloway, 3ft deep and crossing the site from N - S. There is a possible house platform in the SE and possibly another, which lies across the holloway to the W. A low bank on the NE side of the field is probably the boundary of a paddock or close and a shallow ditch in the western part of the field may have enclosed further building sites. Large irregular depressions indicate possible quarrying.
O1. A series of fairly well preserved platforms N of the Castle. To the N of the road leading to the farm are at least 8 platforms. To the S they are less distinct as ploughing has taken place here. Fields under pasture. To N of road earthworks standing to approximately 1m in places. Pylons erected in the 1950s cross the site. Earthworks less evident to S.
S3, Medieval pottery. --/02/1958, Farrer.
R2, Earthworks on DMV site at Castle Camps. Photographs also show the castle earthworks: these not plotted as they are already shown on the 1:10,560.(H Snape 12/12/1983, CUCAP AP CFB 90 used)
R3, Castle Camps. The village moved from Castle Camps to Camps Green towards the end of the Middle Ages.

7-8. The deserted Medieval village of Castle Camps lays outside and below the outer bailey ditch to the north-east of the Castle at TL 626426. All but a small area of earthworks has now been destroyed, but Medieval pottery has been found over a wide area indicating its former extent.

The main feature of the site is a narrow hollow-way which crosses the site while on its east side is a house site and another lies across the hollow-way to the west. It is probable that the village grew up after 1066 as a direct result of the building of the castle and is not an early settlement there.

When the castle fell into disuse towards the end of the Medieval period, the village then decayed. Neither the actual size of the village nor its date of desertion can be ascertained from documents listed by Beresford.

9. Earthworks representing this former village are situated in level lush permanent pasture; situation in level lush permanent pasture; situation and general description as in authority 1. Other than the noted buildings the earthworks represent perimeter demarcations, levelled building platforms, inner plot perimeters, fragmentary crofts, associated tracks and spoil mounds.

The complex has been much quarried, and a recent drainage pipe bisects the work and adds to the spoil. A hollow way, field bank, and amorphous disturbances in the field to the south-west of the main nucleation (OS No 264) indicates an extension of the village in this direction. The extant earthworks are of varying dimensions, some being too slight for survey at the published scale whilst others achieve a maximum height of circa 6.0m. Tithe map of 1840 consulted but not helpful. Surveyed on MSD at 1:2500. SUSI copy with this report.
