Name:King Street Roman Road - Wilderspool - Stretton section
SMR Number:436/1/2
Type of record:Monument
Map Sheet:SJ68NW
Parish:APPLETON, WARRINGTON

Summary

A section of King Street Roman road was sectioned at Appleton in 1964. The road lay 14ins below ground level, resting on a layer of clean orange coloured sand. The road itself was made up of 5 inch pebbles topped by gravel. Another section was observed nearby which was composed of compacted sand and gravel with a layer of red clay. The difference in construction may suggest a fork in the road or a rebuild.
King Street Roman road runs between Wilderspool and Middlewich and then onto Chesterton in Staffordshire
