Summary

Part of King Street Roman road that ran between Wilderspool and Middlewich was cut by petrol pipe line in 1960. The road surface exposed was 18ft wide (5.5 metres) but had been cut by a ditch on the western edge so may have been wider. It was gently cambered with a pebble and sandstone chip surface on a bed of sand. Underneath the sand was a thin layer of black material that may be brushwood on top of a layer of grey clay.
