Full description

A courtyard house consisting of a sub-circular end room and two irregular side rooms, opening onto a central courtyard. The house is aligned east-west, has overall dimensions of roughly 25m by 22m and is entered from the east. This courtyard house was partially excavated in 1954 (h1, b6). The stratigraphy was constant in all sections, but the ground had been considerably disturbed by stone removal for hedging and collapse of the original walling. Occupation layers were notably rich in pottery within the round and side rooms. No hearth was found though post holes were found in the cutting 'ai'. Finds included beach pebbles and Samian ware, coarse and cordoned pottery. Thomas (b6) suggests occupation from the first half of the 1st century AD to the 2nd or 3rd centuries AD. This courtyard house was sketched at 1:1250 by the OS fieldworker (h2). It is part of the courtyard house settlement at Mulfra Vean (16180).
