Full description

A courtyard house investigated by Hirst (b5), surveyed at 1:2500 by the OS in 1961 (h2) and listed by Russell in 1971 (b8). Weatherhill in 1982 records a courtyard house, No 2, connected by a slight lynchet to Courtyard House 1 (30725.3). The house measures 20m by 20m with a north-west facing entrance which leads into a long narrow courtyard, on the north-eastern side of which is the poorly preserved long room. On the southern side of the courtyard are two oval rooms. The westerly, the larger of the two, is at a substantially higher level than the remainder of the house. The second oval room has a small 0.3m high orthostat on the western side of its entrance. The round room is well defined and the western jamb of its entrance, 0.8m high, survives. Fragmentary masonry remains on the north side of the house but the walls are mostly sharp, grass grown banks up to 1.5m high (h4, b10). The monument is included in the Schedule. The site is visible on air photographs (p1-p6) and was plotted for the NMP.
