Full description

A courtyard house recorded by Henderson (b2), surveyed at 1:2500 by the OS in 1961 (h2), and listed by Russell in 1971 (b8). Weatherhill in 1982 records a courtyard house, No 3, a large structure consisting of two semi-detached units which measures 22m in length, with an overall width of 25m. Both units have west facing entrances, blocked by a modern field wall. The northern unit, No 3a, has its southern entrance jamb incorporated into the field wall, and consists of a long courtyard with long room on its northern side, a well preserved round room, and may also have had a stable recess on its south side. The southern unit, No 3b, at a slightly higher level is more elaborate in plan. The entrance has a freestanding northern jamb, 0.9m tall. On the southern side of the courtyard is a long room and an oval room, set at a higher level again. The oval room appears to have a back door with a 0.9m high jambstone, has an east facing back door leadng to a small contemporary garden plot, and is in good preservation, but with little visible stonework. The walls of the northern unit reach a height of 1.5m and those of the southern unit, 1.2m (h4, b10). The monument is included in the Schedule. Visible on air photographs (p1-p6) and was plotted for the NMP.
