Full description

A courtyard house recorded by Henderson (b2) and investigated by Hirst (b5), was surveyed by the OS at 1:2500 in 1961 (h2) and is listed by Russell in 1971 (b8). Weatherhill in 1982 records a courtyard house, No 1, 21m long by 17m wide, with the western facing entrance now blocked by a modern field wall which incorporates the northern jambstone. A large courtyard is flanked by two long rooms, that to the north having both entrance jambs in situ, 0.4m and 0.9m in height, and that to the south at a higher level, with jambs 0.8m high. The round room is well defined and a 0.9m jambstone survives on the southern side of its entrance. The walls of the house appear as sharp, grassy banks with little visible stonework, with a maximum height of 1.2m (h4, b10). The monument is included in the Schedule. Visible on air photographs (p1-p6) and was plotted for the NMP.
